چکیده

Introduction Papillomaviruses are a heterogeneous group of DNA viruses which occur predominantly in squamous epithelium, causing hyperplastic, papillomatous, and verrucous squamous epithelial lesions in man and in a wide range of animals. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been reported in several body sites, such as anogenital tract, urethra, skin, larynx, tracheobronchial mucosa, nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, mouth, and oesophagus.'3 Strong evidence over the past few years has implicated an aetiological role for HPV infection in the development of intraepithelial neoplasia and squamous cell carcinoma, particularly in the lower genital tract and in the larynx, and epidermodysplasia verruciformis. 13 This evidence has come from different sources, such as animal experiments, epidemiological surveys, clinical observations and molecular biological studies. The purpose of this paper is to summarise briefly this evidence.

Detection of human papilloma viruses type 16 and 18 by PCR and RFLP in paraffin-embedded cervical cancer tissue specimens

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) infect mucosal and cutaneous epithelia and cause malignant and benign neoplastic lesions. Human papillomaviruses cause 250000 deaths per year from cervical cancer most often in developing countries. This major public health problem make them important targets in the search for Human papillomaviruses detection methods that may play a role in cervical cancer screen...

Molecular epidemiology of Human Papillomaviruses in breast cancer, Golestan province of Iran

Abstract Background and objectives: Breast cancer is the most prevalent one in women. Some of the common causative factors are genetic background, nutritional and environmental factors. Viruses are believed as a risk factor in this cancer, too. Recent studies reported that Human Papillomaviruses can be one of the possible risk factors of breast cancer. This study focused on investigation of the...

The frequency of human papillomaviruses and Epstein–Barr virus in colorectal cancer samples in Algeria

Background: environmental factors may play a role in colon cancer. In this view, several studies investigated tumor samples for the presence of various viral DNA with conflictiong results.  The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in patients with colorectal carcinomas. Materials and methods: In this  study, we co...

E6-Specific Detection and Typing of Human Papillomaviruses in Oral Cavity Specimens from Iranian Patients

Background: Detection and quantification of human Papillomavirus (HPV) genome in oral carcinoma play an important role in diagnosis, as well as implications for progression of disease. Methods: We evaluated tissues from 50 esopharyngeal cancers collected from different regions of Iran for HPV E6 using the two type-specific primers sets. E6 gene of HPV genotypes was amplified by specific primers...

Depletion of CpG Dinucleotides in Papillomaviruses and Polyomaviruses: A Role for Divergent Evolutionary Pressures

BACKGROUND Papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses are small ds-DNA viruses infecting a wide-range of vertebrate hosts. Evidence supporting co-evolution of the virus with the host does not fully explain the evolutionary path of papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses. Studies analyzing CpG dinucleotide frequencies in virus genomes have provided interesting insights on virus evolution. CpG dinucleotide ...

Preventive and Therapeutic Vaccines against Human Papillomaviruses Associated Cervical Cancers

Cervical cancer is, globally known to be, one of the most common cancers among women especially indeveloping countries. More than 90% of cervical cancers are associated with high-risk humanpapillomaviruses (HPVs) particularly HPV types 16 and 18. Two major strategies have been developed forprevention and treatment of cervical cancer and other HPV-associated malignancies; the first one is based ...
